The booklet titled, ‘Santos au Arrauceiros” in Portuguese was written by Freedom Fighter late Sri Evagrio Jorge of Carmona-Goa, and published in 1944 by Gomantak Praja Mandal Bombay ( now Mumbai). The account depicted the bestial events of “Inquisition” of 16th Century Goa.
The book was translated into English after his death by Thomas Dias who was also a freedom fighter.
The book meticulously narrates the Inquisition-carnage count by count, with selective words and without exaggerating facts. The author cited Portuguese records/files from archives, letters & books from eminent Europeans and Indian authors including literary luminaries such as Dr. Juliao Menezes, Dr. T. B. Cunha, Cunha Riveira, Dr. M. Braganza and even Catholic priests who had first-hand knowledge of these events while compiling this booklet. The translation too, has referred to similar citations from “Inquisition of Goa” authored by late historian A. K. Priolkar, 1961), “Goa’s Freedom Struggle-a History” by Prof. M. H. Sardesai (A Goa Govt’s publication-vol I pages 550 *Vol. II pages 686), Dr. Tela Mascarenhas’ “When the mango-trees blossom 1976”, “Goa Awaking” by Evagrio Jorge and “Oriente Conquistado” by Fr. Francis de Souza, etc. while authenticating the truth of the events described by Jorge in his book.”
