Karkis is ageing and going blind, and he must look to his succession. He has two sons, Peglar and Ragul, and the division will depend on his assessment of their merits. He thinks highly of Ragul but has a low opinion of Peglar.
To qualify for the inheritance they must each meet three gruelling tests of strength and courage. Ragul completes his and now it’s Peglar’s turn. But whereas Ragul is sturdy and athletic, Peglar is bookish and not given to physical pursuits, and reconciles himself to failure.
However, he gets support from two unexpected quarters. His father’s Steward takes pity on him, and with his coaching and help he manages the tests. At the same time he encounters Yalka, a tough girl from the slums, who forces him to see the hollowness and injustice of the privileged life he leads.
With Peglar’s tests over, Ragul hatches a savage plot intended to destroy him. Matters come to a head when they have to face each other in the dreaded cage, an enclosure in which they are locked to fight until one of them is unable to leave. Peglar’s biggest challenge is here.”
