Galicia is a surprisingly well-kept secret to those of us who live here. Except for the Camino de Santiago pilgrim route and the Madrileños who descend on the coast near to Santiago in summer, the region is not well-known as a tourist destination. This means that the inland areas in particular are unspoilt and definitely off the beaten track. Even the beautiful coastline is all but empty outside the July-August high season. One can potter around much of Galicia without any crowds to spoil the enjoyment of everything she has to offer.
Part of the problem, and the charm, of Galicia is that it is not ‘on the way’ to anywhere. The next destination westwards is the expanse of the wild Atlantic Ocean. To the south, separated by the mighty river Miño, is Portugal. To the east, beyond the mountains, lies the mass of the Iberian Peninsula.
This is the place I and my husband ‘S’ have called home since we bought our wreck of a stone farmhouse in the summer of 2007.
Our adventures renovating A Casa do Campo (the country house), defying bureaucracy to marry in Galicia two years later, and renovating a second house for my then 84-year-old mother, Iris, who moved to Galicia in 2015, are described in my Writing Home series of travelogue memoirs: Plum, Courgette & Green Bean Tart; Tomato, Fig & Pumpkin Jelly and Chestnut, Cherry & Kiwi Fruit Sponge.
Whilst working on that series, I was acutely aware that many of the places we have discovered over the years wouldn’t fit into those stories. Thus, was born this book.
Pulpo, Pig & Peppers – travels around Galicia is part travel guide, mainly travelogue memoir, of places, events and attractions we have visited and enjoyed. Each place I wrote about elicited a memory, an anecdote, or a yarn which turned this book into a labour of love – for all the wonderful places in Beautiful Green Galicia.
I invite you to join los tres as we visit some of our favourite places in this wild and unspoilt part of the Iberian Peninsula.
There are tales of missing passports, hillsides sprouting chimneys, strangely shaped shower caps and why we can never return to Portugal. But most of all, Pulpo, Pig & Peppers – travels around Galicia is a love letter to our adopted land, and all the beautiful places she hides here.
From Viking festivals to undiscovered beaches, Celtic roundhouses to Galician peppers, and from mountain villages to ancient forests – each chapter is devoted to one trip, one experience, one more enjoyable adventure here at the end of the world.
Whether you know the area already, plan to visit sometime, or just enjoy armchair travelling, I hope you will enjoy discovering Galicia with us. Ata logo”
