What if I hadn’t left her standing on the porch steps?
What if I asked her to come with me?
What if I told her I’d follow her?
What if I gave long-distance a chance?
What if I kept my forever wrapped in my arms and did anything I could to keep her there?
Eight years of “what if,” “maybe we could have made it,” and “why didn’t I try” haunt me daily. Eight years ago, I did the noble thing and pushed Brooke to follow her dreams. Now I spend hours every day looking for her in the crowds. Every time I board a plane, I search for her and hope that someday fate will bring us together the way I promised her it would. I regretted my decision to walk away from her as soon as I did it. I knew it was the only way she’d chase her dreams. I didn’t want to be why she didn’t live the life she dreamed about, and I didn’t want her to resent me.
Brooke
I watched Sam walk away. I waited for him to turn around and change his mind. I waited for him to come back for me, but he didn’t. I did what he told me to do. I chased my dreams, and now when I go back to Blossom Springs, I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if he turned around that day and looked back at me. He promised that one day fate would bring us together. I search airports, restaurants, and crowded streets, looking for him, and hope that he’s doing the same.
Their paths cross in the most unexpected place: their hometown, a place both of them avoid. Sam hopes that the sparks that fly between them last more than the week they’re both in town, but Brooke doesn’t want to talk about more than just the week because she’s never believed in forever and refuses to say the word or make plans that might lead toward the four-word question, two-word promise, and ring that comes with those things.
