It's the year 2028. The protagonist Laimdota “Dotty" Godman is the richest Latvian on the planet, who made her fortune working for the eccentric South African billionaire Bash Venters, an electric car and space entrepreneur. When an old astrophysicist friend reveals to Dotty that the planet Earth is being menaced by an asteroid named 99942 Apophis, Dotty needs to enlist the help of Bash to “save the world”. All the while dealing with personal affairs: tensions in her marriage to a provocative Estonian painter, teenage daughter who has secretly joined a left-wing protest movement, and a widowed Dad facing allegations of KGB ties which turn into a blackmail op against the whole family after his sudden death. The story unfolds in the Antibes, Madrid, Latvia, the US, the UK, South Africa, Sweden, and as it progresses, the motives of the characters are cast in doubt and it becomes unclear who the real heroes are and how real the threat actually is.
An ironic look at contemporary society, the novel is an idiosyncratic blend of psychological realism and satire, thriller and science fiction.”
