“Book Descriptions: F’din il-poeżija, raġel qed imut jagħmel vjaġġ lura fil-kapitli ta’ ħajtu. Jerġa’ jżur mumenti li ttimbrawh u episodji li tawh grinta biex ikompli l-vjaġġ ta’ ħajtu hu u jegħja.

Jiżżerżaq mal-kantunieri tal-memorja u jixxennaq ma’ dak li jiftakar, ma’ dak li jixtieq jiftakar, u ma’ dak li jaħseb li qed jiftakar. Waqt li jitbandal mal-passat, jipprova jifhem il-mogħdijiet li minnhom terraq biex wasal s’hawn.

F’dan ix-xogħol bejn il-ħajja u l-mewt, dan ir-raġel qed imut idur fuq ħajtu biex jiftakar, jifhem, u jaċċetta mnejn ġie. Waqt li jinġibed minn toroq qodma u mill-ħlewwa tat-togħmiet u l-viżjonijiet tal-bieraħ, hemm impuls fih li donnu jrid iqajjem mill-mewt il-passat u, miegħu, il-preżent.

“Daqsxejn ta’ Requiem lil Leli” tisfida lilna l-qarrejja biex, ma’ dan ir-raġel qed imut, niftakru min konna u, jekk għad fadlilna ċans, min nistgħu nkunu. Huwa xogħol li, għalkemm jinħass li qed jieħu l-aħħar nifsijiet, jinsisti li dment li wieħed għadu jiftakar, mela wieħed għadu jeżisti.

    -----

In this poem, a dying man journeys back to his life’s chapters. He revisits moments that marked him and episodes that drove him to persist in life despite exhaustion.

Sliding along the edges of memory, he relishes in what he remembers, in that which he wishes to remember, and in that which he thinks he is remembering. He swings with his past while he tries to understand the paths he pursued that led him to where he now is.

In this work between life and death, this dying man turns on his life to remember, understand, and embrace where he came from. While being drawn to old terrain and lured by the sweet tastes and visions of days gone by, an impulse within him seeks to resuscitate the past and, with it, the present.

“A Modest Requiem for Leli” challenges us readers to join this dying man in recalling who we were and, if time permits, who we could be. It is a work which, although it seems to be taking its final breaths, insists that as long as one remembers, one lives on.
