The book of William Henry Scott lays bare the real and unique nature of slavery as practiced by natives Filipino. The first two chapters describe the different context of Slavery in Europe especially in Spain and here in the Philippines. In Spanish context, it is legal to enslave non-Christian by capturing them in wars or buying them in the market. The city of Seville became the central market of slave trade in Spain. On the first chapter, Branding of Slaves is also mentioned where in they marked a letter “S” on one cheek and a straight line on the other representing a nail (clavo), taken together to mean es-clavo (slave).
