BOOK 1: THE GRIM JOKER
Hamilton Lorne is sent a threatening card with the grotesque picture of a fool. Superintendent Robert Budd believes the message is a practical joke.
But no one is laughing when Lorne is found stabbed through the heart. Budd could’ve prevented his death if he’d taken the threat seriously. Now he’s scrambling to find the killer before more end up dead.
BOOK 2: THE JOCKEY
Crooked bookmaker Simon Corbett is blackmailed for thousands of pounds for tarnishing the image of horse racing. When Corbett is found stabbed in the neck, surely the blackmailer is to blame? But nothing in this case is straightforward as Budd soon realises.
BOOK 3: THE SILVER HORSESHOE

BOOK 4: THE WITCHES’ MOON
Budd returns to the scene of an unsolved case to investigate another brutal murder in similar circumstances. He agrees to take part in a re-enactment of the unsolved crime, joining fellow house guests who were there. But when they start getting picked off, Budd wonders if he can finally find the truth before he becomes the next victim.
BOOK 5: THE FOOTBALL POOL MURDERS
Most would think winning a fortune on the Football Pools was a stroke of good luck. But when that week’s winners are murdered, winning a fortune becomes a losing gamble. Budd must work out if this was a poor attempt to steal the winnings or if something more sinister is behind their deaths.
BOOK 6: THE HUNTSMAN
The villagers of Chalebury are living in fear. A series of robberies, gruseome deaths, and the alleged sighting of a ghostly huntsman. Budd is only called to investigate the murders but with few clues, he is getting nowhere. Are the villagers’ ghostly sightings far-fetched or do they hold the key to cracking the case?
BOOK 7: THE TWELVE APOSTLES
Lew Cator is deliberately struck in a hit and run and left for dead in a gutter. Budd arrives as Cator takes his last breath, uttering a cryptic message about priceless treasure and a missing key. This is just the start of a killing spree that won’t stop until Budd solves the mystery.
BOOK 8: THE SEVEN LAMPS
Jill Hartley was only supposed to deliver important papers to her firm’s client, an Egyptian scholar. Instead, she finds the man at the foot of the stairs in a pool of blood. His head battered to a pulp. Could his murder be linked to Ancient Egyptian death rituals? Budd must look to the past to solve the present.

John Brockwell is found impaled to a tree by a pitchfork. A playing card pinned to his body — the ten of diamonds. When the body of John’s sister is discovered with another playing card, Budd knows this is personal. The Brockwell family are strongly disliked, but who hated them enough to kill?

The Tipster telephones the Daily Clarion and announces his intention to commit five murders starting with Lord Latimer. No one takes it seriously, until Lord Latimer is shot dead exactly as described. Budd is in a race against time to prevent more murders.”
