Christmas Day is a time of celebration for many people all around the world. Those who celebrate it see it as a joyous time. But Christmas is celebrated in many different ways in different countries. One country has a feast known as 'reveillon'. In another country people like to go to the beach on Christmas Day! Can you guess which countries these are?
In the USA, Britain and other English-speaking countries it is customary to eat turkey on Christmas Day. But where does this tradition come from? The bird comes from Mexico and was brought to Europe by Spanish adventurers. Turkish traders popularised the bird, and that is how it got its name. Eating poultry was already a well-established tradition in England. And with the arrival of the turkey in 1510 there was an addition to the Christmas feast. England later spread the tradition of eating turkey at Christmas to its many colonies such as those in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
